Taking photos in clubs or at birthday parties can be difficult because of how dark it is. And a professional photographer wouldn’t deal with it just by relying on flash. Flash provides a really harsh light and photos come out looking bad. I use a very ‘fast’ lens (f 1.4, 50mm for the camera geeks), which basically means that even in low light it can give you a good image. You still need a bit of ‘fill in’ flash, which I used for this shot. I deliberately rotated the camera to give a bit of movement blur, to reflect all the energy.
