Weddings on very bright sunny days are a real challenge to photographers. At Baljit and Sanjay’s wedding in Slough in Berkshire, I had to shoot lots of group shots in quick succession, so I had to think on my feet about how to position people best to avoid unflattering shadows on their faces and squinting, which ruins otherwise good photos. But through experience of wedding photography in all kinds of lighting conditions, my instincts are very good. So, I arranged the group shots so that wedding guests had the sun at roughly a 45 degree angle. It provides good natural lighting to their face, minimises shadow and the need for squinting. I also used a bit of ‘fill in’ flash to further soften shadows, and finally, I used a bit of selective brightening in Photoshop.
