Using available light well is how to achieve the most natural and warm wedding photography. While good use of flash, even on bright sunny days, is an essential skill for a professional wedding photographer, just as important is the ability to use natural light and shadow well. In this bridal preparation shot, Abbie had just finished getting ready. She was standing in her parents’ bedroom, just gathering herself, before heading to the Church in Hampstead Heath, North London. It was early-afternoon on a dull October day and the limited amount of light coming in through the window created a rich palette of light and shadow. I asked Abbie to face the window, so that the light emphasised the lace detail of her wedding dress. I took a few shots, and altered the tonal range slightly in post-production to create an image that is both an elegant wedding portrait and also a detail study of her wedding dress.
