Wedding photography – shooting in the ‘magic hour’

All photography is about harnessing light. and the ‘magic hour’ – the hour before sunset can provide an especially beautiful light, especially on a hot mid summer evening. The tricky thing for a professional wedding photographer is that in mid summer this means dragging a bride and groom away from all the garrulous drinking and dancing at about 8.30pm. At Colleen and Maurice’s wedding in Epping in East London, I suggested to them at 8pm that as pretty as all the disco lights were, an amazing sunset was unfolding outside, and asked whether they might want to take a stroll in the grounds of the farm. They thought it was a great idea, and as well as it being one of the best moments of their day, it also resulted in some of the best wedding photographs of the day too.
